Formed in Nairobi in 2005, Kenyan afro-pop band Sauti Sol, consisting of Bien-Aimé Baraza, Willis Chimano, Savara Mudigi, and Polycarp Otieno, has garnered numerous accolades including winning Best African Group at the MTV EMA in 2014 and receiving a BET Awards nomination in 2015. Their third album, Live and Die in Afrika, was released for free download globally in 2015 under their label Sauti Sol Entertainment, amassing 400,000 downloads in just 48 hours.
In 2018, Sauti Sol unveiled their fourth album, #AfrikanSauce, featuring the hit track "Melanin," followed by their fifth studio album #MidnightTrain in 2020 under Universal Music Africa. The lead single from the album, "Suzanna," topped charts across the continent, solidifying the band's status as trailblazers in the African music scene.
