French folk-rock icon Renaud Séchan, known simply as Renaud, emerged as a voice for urban Parisian angst and socio-political themes, despite his middle-class upbringing. Born in Paris in 1952, Renaud's early activism during the student revolts of May 1968 led him to a career in music and acting. His debut LP, Amoureux de Paname, in 1975, marked the beginning of his journey as a politically charged singer-songwriter. Renaud's subsequent albums, such as Laisse Béton and Marche à l'Ombre, solidified his status as a folk-rock icon in France, addressing themes of urban despair and rebellion.

In the 1980s, Renaud's sound evolved to include mainstream French pop influences, leading to commercial success with albums like Dès Que le Vent Soufflera and Mistral Gagnant. He continued to engage in activism, founding charity organizations and releasing politically charged albums like Marchand de Cailloux. Despite personal struggles with alcoholism and a tumultuous personal life, Renaud's music remained a powerful force, culminating in the critically acclaimed self-titled album in 2016, which reaffirmed his status as a chart-topping artist in France.
