Biography
Punch Brothers, a groundbreaking string band formed in the late 2000s by mandolinist Chris Thile after the disbandment of Nickel Creek, quickly gained acclaim for their fusion of bluegrass, classical, and jazz influences. Their albums consistently topped the Billboard Bluegrass charts and showcased their virtuosic instrumentalism and innovative arrangements. Punch Brothers' 2018 release, "All Ashore," won the Grammy Award for Best Folk Album, and they followed it up in 2022 with "Hell on Church Street," a tribute to bluegrass legend Tony Rice.
Initially coming together in 2006 as a collaborative project for Chris Thile's solo album, Punch Brothers evolved into a roots music supergroup with a distinct progressive sound. Their collaborations with acclaimed producers like Jon Brion and T-Bone Burnett led to a series of critically acclaimed albums, including "Antifogmatic" and "The Phosphorescent Blues." Alongside their musical endeavors, Chris Thile took over as the host of NPR's A Prairie Home Companion, with Punch Brothers serving as the house band. Their latest project, "Hell on Church Street," pays homage to Tony Rice's influential 1983 album and continues Punch Brothers' legacy of pushing boundaries in string band music.
