Biography
Nickel Creek, a trio comprised of siblings Sean and Sara Watkins and mandolinist Chris Thile, gained acclaim for their adventurous blend of bluegrass and eclectic influences in progressive acoustic music. The group's youthful and forward-thinking approach, showcased in their 2000 debut produced by Alison Krauss, led to crossover success, a Grammy Award, and critical acclaim. After a hiatus, the trio reunited in 2014, releasing their fifth album, A Dotted Line, and continued sporadic performances, culminating in their 2023 release, Celebrants, featuring a complex and daring sound.
Formed in 1989 in San Diego, Nickel Creek originated from a young string band mentored by Bluegrass Etc. The trio's evolution from bluegrass roots to a more diverse sound, highlighted in albums like This Side and Why Should the Fire Die?, led to critical recognition and Grammy wins. Following a hiatus, the members pursued solo projects, with Thile forming Punch Brothers and Sara Watkins collaborating with John Paul Jones. The group's reunion in 2014 resulted in A Dotted Line, followed by Celebrants in 2023, showcasing their continued innovation and musical prowess.
