Beth Carvalho

Beth Carvalho is a prominent Brazilian singer and composer known for her association with samba and the Mangueira school. Her solo albums from 1974 to 1988 are highly regarded in Brazilian MPB for their consistent quality, featuring works by iconic samba composers like Nelson Cavaquinho and Cartola. Carvalho has also supported emerging composers and contributed to the popularity of artists such as Zeca Pagodinho in the Brazilian music scene.

Born Elizabeth Santos Leal de Carvalho in Rio de Janeiro, Carvalho began her musical career at a young age, performing on radio shows and studying music theory. She gained recognition for her interpretation of "Andança" in 1968, leading to her first LP and subsequent success in the samba genre. Throughout the '70s and '80s, Carvalho continued to release acclaimed albums, supporting young composers who would later become influential figures in Brazilian samba and pagode music.
