Biography
Windir, formed in 1994 by Terje "Valfar" Bakken in Norway's Sogndal region, blended black metal with folk music, history, and mythology. The band released two demos before their debut album, Sóknardalr, in 1997, featuring Steingrim on drums and Steinarson on clean vocals in the Sognamål dialect. Windir's second album, Arntor, arrived in 1999 as a concept album based on a local warrior legend, with lyrics in English to reach a wider audience.
By 2001, Windir expanded for live performances, adding new members for their album 1184. The band's folk influences diminished in favor of a more metal-oriented sound, a direction continued on their fourth album, Likferd, released in 2003. Tragically, Windir's future was cut short when Valfar passed away in 2004 due to exposure and hypothermia while hiking to a family cabin, leading to the band's dissolution. Windir's final release, Valfar, Ein Windir, served as a tribute and fundraiser for Valfar's family.
