Biography
Wilson Simonal, a pioneering figure in Brazilian popular music, introduced the pilantragem sound in the late '60s, becoming the country's first Black pop superstar. Born Wilson Simonal De Castro on February 26, 1939, in Rio de Janeiro, he began his career under the mentorship of Carlos Imperial before achieving success with hits like "Balanço Zona Sul" and "Meu Limão, Meu Limoeiro." Simonal's innovative fusion of soul, jazz, and samba marked a departure from the bossa nova sound of the era. However, his career faced a setback when he was accused of being a police informant, leading to financial troubles and legal issues.
Despite the controversy, Simonal continued to release music throughout the '70s and '80s, with albums like "Ninguem Proibe o Amor" and "A Vida é So Pra Cantar." He passed away on June 25, 2000, leaving behind a musical legacy that is now gaining recognition posthumously. His sons, Max De Castro and Wilson Simoninha, have carried on his musical lineage, with the latter spearheading a reissue campaign to showcase his father's influential body of work.
