Biography

Born in Santurce, Puerto Rico in 1972, rapper Tego Calderón was raised in Carolina and Miami, FL, where he developed a diverse musical background influenced by Latin pop, jazz, and percussion. After making guest appearances on other artists' albums, Calderón released his debut, El Abayarde, in 2002, which quickly gained popularity and established him as a Latin music superstar.

Calderón's subsequent albums, such as 2004's El Enemy de los Guasíbiri, showcased a fusion of dancehall and street-level themes, reflecting his critique of the corporate nature of salsa music. As reggaeton gained popularity in the early 2000s, Calderón collaborated with hip-hop producers and appeared on remixes of mainstream tracks. His 2006 release, The Underdog/El Subestimado, marked a shift towards exploring Afro-Caribbean culture and solidified his partnership with Warner Brothers imprint Atlantic Records.
