Sumac, a Pacific Northwest trio formed in 2014 by guitarist/vocalist Aaron Turner (Isis, Old Man Gloom) along with Canadian drummer Nick Yacyshyn (Baptists) and bassist Brian Cook (Botch, Russian Circles), blend sludge metal and experimental noise rock with intense, complex compositions featuring time changes and ambient interludes. Their discography explores themes such as anxiety struggles and spiritual aspects of love, often collaborating with Japanese noise guitarist Keiji Haino on albums like Love in Shadow (2018) and The Healer (2024).

The group released their debut album The Deal in 2015, followed by What One Becomes in 2016 under Thrill Jockey. Sumac's partnership with Keiji Haino led to collaborative albums and EPs, including American Dollar Bill (2018) and Even for Just the Briefest Moment (2019). Their diverse sound further evolved with releases like May You Be Held (2020) and Into This Juvenile Apocalypse (2022), showcasing a blend of sludge metal and free improv.
