Biography
Sugar Candy Mountain, a leading force in the neo-psychedelic pop revival since the early 2010s, blends sunny, retro sounds with lush, sophisticated composition. Their evolution from lo-fi experimentation in early releases like 2013's Mystic Hits to a brighter, synth-driven psych-pop on 2018's Do Right culminated in the eclectic fifth album, Impression, released in 2021.
Starting as a solo project in 2010 by Oakland-based musician Will Halsey, Sugar Candy Mountain's unique sound emerged through his collaboration with Ash Reiter, drawing inspiration from '60s West Coast psychedelia, pastoral folk, and experimental pop artists like Os Mutantes and the Flaming Lips. With 2013's Mystic Hits marking the transition to a full-fledged live band, the group's Brazilian influences expanded, culminating in a more modern approach on 2018's Do Right, and further evolving with the release of Impression in 2021, introducing deep '70s grooves and Krautrock influences.
