Biography

Somi Kakoma, known simply as Somi in the jazz world, is a Billboard-charting and Grammy-nominated vocalist, composer, writer, and actor. Her fifth studio album, "Zenzile: The Reimagination of Miriam Makeba," is a companion project to the critically acclaimed original Off-Broadway musical "Dreaming Zenzile," in which she wrote and starred. Somi's live album "Holy Room" with the Frankfurt Radio Big Band earned her a 2021 Grammy nomination for Best Jazz Vocal Album, making her the first African woman nominated in any Grammy jazz category.

A Doris Duke Artist Award recipient, Somi has won two NAACP Image Awards for Best Vocal Jazz Album and the inaugural Jazz Music Award for Best Vocal Performance. She is also a Soros Equality Fellow, a United States Artist Fellow, a TED Senior Fellow, and a Sundance Theatre Fellow, as well as the founder of Salon Africana. With degrees in Cultural Anthropology, African Studies, and Performance Studies, Somi recently made her acting debut on Broadway in the play "Jaja’s African Hair Braiding."
