Formed in 2006 by Jeremy Davidson, Dom Alessio, and Jonathan Khor, sleepmakeswaves solidified with Alex Wilson, Tom Binetter, and William Smith. Their debut EP, In Today Already Walks Tomorrow, released in 2008, gained attention with the track "One Day, You Will Teach Me to Let Go of My Fears" featured in a popular fan-made Twilight video. The band's 2011 debut album, ...And So We Destroyed Everything, showcased their electronic experimentation and garnered critical acclaim, leading to tours with Russian Circles, Mono, and Boris, and nominations at the ARIAs.

Following a successful international tour in 2012, sleepmakeswaves signed with Monotreme Records in 2013, reissuing their debut album and releasing the remix album ...And Then They Remixed Everything. Their 2014 album, Love of Cartography, featuring Tim Adderley on drums, reached number 31 on Australia's albums chart. Despite lineup changes, the band continued to tour extensively, with Daniel Oreskovic joining for their third studio LP, Made of Breath Only, in 2017.
