On January 17th, 2023, Ryuichi released "12", his 15th solo album, which featured 12 songs composed during his battle with cancer. Due to his declining health, he was unable to perform live, but in late 2022, he gave a final performance captured in the concert film Ryuichi Sakamoto | Opus. Sakamoto passed away in March 2023 at the age of 71, and in his memory, his family and friends launched TREES FOR SAKAMOTO, a tree planting initiative for fans to contribute to reforestation efforts.
