Originally formed from members of the Chicago band the American Breed, Rufus evolved with various lineup changes and reached commercial success with hits like "Tell Me Something Good" and "Sweet Thing."

Chaka Khan's solo endeavors did not deter her ongoing involvement with the band, leading to successful albums like Masterjam.
