Biography
Rufus, a successful funk group in the '70s, is best known for launching the career of soul diva Chaka Khan. With Khan's powerful vocals and a solid groove, the band achieved hits on both pop and R&B charts until Khan's departure in 1983. Originally formed from members of the Chicago band the American Breed, Rufus evolved with various lineup changes and reached commercial success with hits like "Tell Me Something Good" and "Sweet Thing."
Despite lineup changes, Rufus maintained their funk sensibility and continued to produce hits into the late '70s. Chaka Khan's solo endeavors did not deter her ongoing involvement with the band, leading to successful albums like Masterjam. However, as the '80s approached, Rufus faced declining chart success until their final hit with "Ain't Nobody." Khan eventually departed, achieving solo stardom with hits like "I Feel for You," marking the end of Rufus' successful career.
