Biography
Rotary Connection, known for their psychedelic chamber soul, remains influential with their dramatic string arrangements by Charles Stepney and the exceptional vocal talent of Minnie Riperton. Despite releasing six albums between 1967 and 1971 that blended rock, soul, and psychedelia to great heights, the racially mixed group never gained widespread recognition beyond the Midwest, partially due to management decisions. Nevertheless, Rotary Connection's cult status has grown steadily since the '70s.
Formed in 1967 by Marshall Chess for Cadet Concept, Rotary Connection featured talented instrumentalists and vocalists like Sidney Barnes and Minnie Riperton, under the direction of Charles Stepney. The group's self-titled debut album in 1967 showcased Stepney's lush string arrangements and a mix of originals and innovative covers, setting the tone for subsequent releases. Despite some albums containing filler, each record had standout moments, with Riperton eventually achieving solo success before her untimely death in 1979. Stepney also passed away in 1976, leaving behind a legacy of musical innovation with Rotary Connection.
