Biography
Rising Appalachia, a sibling duo formed by Leah and Chloe Smith, blend Southern folk traditions with contemporary sounds to create music that addresses social issues. Born in Georgia and raised in Atlanta, the sisters developed a passion for soul and hip-hop before reconnecting with their Southern roots. After releasing their debut album in 2006, the duo briefly performed as R.I.S.E. before reverting to Rising Appalachia in 2010. Their dedication to community activism is evident in their self-produced albums and tours, including the 2015 Wider Circles album release and train tour.
Rising Appalachia's commitment to using music as a platform for social change led them to launch the Slow Music Movement and collaborate with the Permaculture Action Network during their Fertile Grounds Tour in 2016. With a lineup that includes percussionist Biko Casini and bassist/guitarist David Brown, the duo continues to champion healthy living and community engagement through their music and performances.
