Richard Strauss

Richard Strauss, born in Munich in 1864, demonstrated musical aptitude at an early age and went on to produce music of extraordinary polish and maturity. His career as a composer was characterized by a focus on the orchestra as his natural medium, leading to a series of pivotal works in the late German Romantic repertoire. Strauss' ability to exploit the coloristic possibilities of the orchestra in tone poems like Don Juan, Ein Heldenleben, and Also sprach Zarathustra showcased his unique talent for using the orchestra as a dramatic device.
