Poison the Well, originally known as An Acre Lost, emerged from Florida's hardcore punk scene with a metalcore sound influenced by Slayer and Hatebreed. After attracting major label attention, the band briefly signed with Atlantic Records but maintained a strong following among hardcore punk fans, releasing albums like Versions in 2007 that showcased their musical evolution.

Since forming in 1998, Poison the Well underwent lineup changes but found stability with members like guitarist Ryan Primack, vocalist Jeff Moreira, and drummer Chris Hornbrook. Signing with Trustkill Records, they gained recognition with their debut album The Opposite of December and continued to tour extensively, solidifying their status as a prominent metalcore act. The band's progression led to a major label deal with Atlantic Records for their innovative third album, You Come Before You, before returning to an independent label and experimenting with different musical styles on subsequent releases like Versions and The Tropic Rot.
