Led by James Mtume and featuring the powerful vocals of Tawatha Agee, Mtume was a chart-topping R&B band signed to Epic from 1978 to 1986. Mtume, known for his work with Miles Davis, blurred the line between himself and the band, co-writing hits like "The Closer I Get to You."
The five Mtume band albums, including Kiss This World Goodbye and Juicy Fruit, produced 11 charting singles and showcased the band's evolution from funky big-band sounds to intimate machine soul. Mtume's "sophisti-funk" sound, also seen in his production work for artists like Phyllis Hyman, continues to influence modern music, with artists like Notorious B.I.G. sampling Mtume's work.
