Michael Franks

Michael Franks, a unique figure in soft jazz and pop music during the 1970s, defied categorization with his crossover sound that resonated with college students. Born in La Jolla, California in 1944, Franks was influenced by swing music and vocal jazz icons like Nat King Cole and Peggy Lee, as well as revered composers such as Ira Gershwin and Irving Berlin. Despite minimal formal music training, Franks' early exposure to music and poetry laid the foundation for his eventual career in music.

Franks gained commercial success with his album "The Art of Tea" in 1976, featuring the hit single "Popsicle Toes," which solidified his signature smooth jazz and pop sound.
