Biography
The Melvins, a pioneering band in acknowledging heavy metal influences within the punk/alternative underground scene, proved to be wildly influential despite their cult status. Their signature gargantuan sound paved the way for grunge icons like Tad, Mudhoney, and Soundgarden, and their creative flexibility allowed them to experiment with various styles and musical configurations, remaining productive and prolific over three decades. Originating from Aberdeen, Washington, the same town as Nirvana, the Melvins inspired many Seattle-area bands with their sludge, although they maintained a cult following even after earning a major-label contract with Atlantic.
Aside from their Melvins projects, Buzz Osborne collaborated with Mike Patton in Fantômas, while the band underwent lineup changes and worked on various releases throughout the late '90s and early 2000s. They continued to innovate, releasing albums such as "Freak Puke" with a stripped-down lineup, and engaging in unique collaborations with artists like Jello Biafra and J.G. Thirlwell. The Melvins also explored new territory with releases like "Three Men and a Baby" and "Basses Loaded," showcasing their willingness to experiment and push boundaries within the rock music landscape.
