Me and That Man, a dark folk, country, and Gothic blues project, emerged in 2017 as an offshoot for Nergal, the frontman of Polish black metal group Behemoth, seeking emotional relief and drawing inspiration from artists like Leonard Cohen and Nick Cave. Collaborating with British/Polish rock musician John Porter, the band released their debut album Songs of Love and Death in 2017, followed by New Man, New Songs, Same Shit, Vol. 1 in 2020 and Vol. 2 in 2021. These albums featured guest appearances from Corey Taylor, Brent Hinds, Matt Heafy, and Sivert Høyem.

The project allowed Nergal to express different emotions and themes compared to his work in black metal, showcasing a unique musical direction. With the band's music reflecting influences from artists like Tom Waits, Me and That Man's sound evolved over the years, culminating in the releases of their two volumes of New Man, New Songs, Same Shit.
