Maceo Parker

Maceo Parker, a pivotal figure in funk music, rose to fame as a saxophonist with James Brown before embarking on a successful career collaborating with artists such as George Clinton, Prince, and Ray Charles. His debut album, Roots Revisited, released in 1990, set the stage for a series of critically acclaimed records including Life on Planet Groove and Funk Overload. Parker's influence continued through the decades with notable releases like Roots & Grooves, Soul Classics, and It's All About Love, showcasing his versatile talents and collaborations with esteemed musicians.

Born in Kinston, North Carolina in 1943, Maceo Parker's musical journey began with his uncle's jazz and R&B band, the Blue Notes, where he honed his skills on the saxophone. Joining James Brown's band in the '60s, Parker's distinctive style on the saxophone became synonymous with Brown's iconic sound. After leaving Brown's band, Parker formed his own group and went on to collaborate with a diverse range of artists like the Red Hot Chili Peppers, Keith Richards, and the Dave Matthews Band. Parker's solo career flourished with albums like Mo' Roots and guest appearances on projects by Prince, Ani DiFranco, and the WDR Big Band Cologne, solidifying his status as a legendary figure in funk and jazz music.
