The London Philharmonic Orchestra, renowned as one of the world's premier ensembles, was founded by Sir Thomas Beecham in 1932, achieving excellence under his leadership until World War II. Despite financial challenges in the 1950s, the orchestra thrived with the guidance of distinguished conductors like Adrian Boult and Georg Solti. Notable moments in its history include groundbreaking tours to China in 1973 and South Africa in 1993, and its current residency at the Royal Festival Hall since 1990.

Initially proposed as the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra by Beecham in the late 1920s, the orchestra's formation was delayed until 1932 due to various challenges, including the BBC's decision to form its own orchestra. Following Beecham's departure during World War II, the orchestra persevered as a cooperative, eventually appointing Eduard van Beinum as Principal Conductor in 1949. Overcoming financial struggles in the 1950s, the orchestra continued to flourish and expand its global presence through the leadership of esteemed conductors and milestone performances around the world.
