Drawing inspiration from Scandinavian one-man black metal pioneers like Bathory's Quorthon, Burzum's Count Grishnackh, and Mortiis, Jef Whitehead adopted the moniker Wrest in 1998, launching his solo project Leviathan. Over the years, Wrest released a prolific number of demos, EPs, and split albums, eventually transitioning to full-length works with albums like The Tenth Sub-Level of Suicide and Tentacles of Whorror. He also collaborated with bands like Sunn 0))) and formed the black metal supergroup Twilight, releasing three albums. Wrest's personal and artistic evolution led to the critically acclaimed Scar Sighted in 2015, marking a significant milestone in his dark, atmospheric musical journey.

In addition to his musical endeavors, Wrest ventured into starting his own label, Profound Lore, and a tattoo business, all while residing in Portland, Oregon and focusing on family life. His dedication to the black metal genre and his ability to channel darkness and intensity into his music have solidified his place in the underground metal scene. The reissue of Leviathan's early albums and compilations by Hammerheart in 2016 further showcased Wrest's enduring impact on the world of extreme music.
