Leningrad

Fronted by Sergey Shnurov, Leningrad's music is likened to pornography for its rawness and incorporation of non-normative language. Initially influenced by Auktsyon's theatrical madness and Russian chanson music, the band gained local favor through frequent performances before solidifying their signature sound with Shnurov's growling vocals. With a large cast of musicians, Leningrad's irreverent image and politically critical lyrics found mainstream success, paving the way for others in the industry.

Formed in 1997 in St. Petersburg, Leningrad's early albums showcased their horn-heavy sound and the influence of Soviet kitchen gatherings. The band's evolution saw them embracing an edgier sound with albums like Dachniki and Piraty XXI Veka. Despite controversies, including a ban in Moscow, Leningrad continued to push boundaries and make waves with their socially disparaging lyrics and energetic performances, solidifying their status as an influential force in Russian music.
