Influenced by artists like Charlie Christian and Django Reinhardt, Burrell became a sought-after sideman, performing with notable musicians such as Dizzy Gillespie and John Coltrane. Moving to New York City in 1956, he established himself as a leading guitarist, recording with legends like Coltrane, Kenny Dorham, and Billie Holiday.

In the following decades, Burrell continued to record and perform, releasing albums like "Midnight Blue" and "Blues – The Common Ground." He also ventured into teaching, leading seminars on Duke Ellington's music and founding the Jazz Studies Program at UCLA.
