Biography

Trumpeter Jon Hassell, known as the originator of the "Fourth World" musical aesthetic, combined world ethnic styles with advanced electronic techniques. Born in Memphis, TN in 1937, he studied under Karlheinz Stockhausen in Europe and collaborated with minimalist pioneers before releasing the electronic project Solid State in 1969. Hassell further developed his unique sound by studying classical Indian music and collaborating with Brian Eno on albums like Possible Musics/Fourth World Vol. 1.

Throughout the 1980s and 1990s, Hassell continued to innovate and collaborate with various artists, including the Kronos Quartet and Farafina percussion ensemble from Burkina Faso. His diverse projects ranged from scoring theatrical productions to experimental dance pieces, as seen in works like Power Spot (1986) and Flash of the Spirit (1989). Hassell's musical journey culminated in collaborations with Ry Cooder and Jacky Terrasson on Fascinoma (1999) and the release of Hollow Bamboo in 2000.
