During the 1990s, Cracker emerged as a Virginia-based band blending alternative pop/rock and country influences, led by singer/guitarist David Lowery who had previously fronted Camper Van Beethoven. Cracker's self-titled debut in 1992 and the follow-up album Kerosene Hat, released in 1993, achieved commercial success with hits like "Teen Angst (What the World Needs Now)" and "Low," respectively. Despite lineup changes, the band continued to release albums, tour, and explore different genres like Southern rock and blues.

In the 2000s, Cracker continued to evolve musically, releasing albums like Forever (2002) and Countrysides (2003) before parting ways with Virgin Records. The band's independent releases, including Greenland (2006) and Sunrise in the Land of Milk and Honey (2009), showcased their enduring creativity and resilience. Cracker's live performances, collaborations with Camper Van Beethoven members, and tours, including a notable visit to Iraq, demonstrated their commitment to their craft and connection with their audience.
