Chris Cagle, a Louisiana native, moved to Houston at a young age and dabbled in music through guitar and piano lessons. He dropped out of college at 19 to pursue a music career, eventually moving to Nashville in 1994. After a period of struggle, Cagle's break came when his songs were noticed by Nashville songwriter Harlan Howard, leading to a publishing deal and success with his debut single "My Love Goes on and On" in 2000. Cagle switched to Capitol Records in 2001 and released several albums before taking a break from music to focus on family and other ventures. He later signed with Big Picture Music Group to release new music, including the single "Got My Country On" in 2011.
