Chicha Libre

Hailing from Brooklyn, Chicha Libre is a multicultural band blending members from France, Mexico, Venezuela, and the US, leading the global resurgence of psychedelic cumbia from Peru since 2006. Initially paying homage to Peruvian Chicha pioneers, the group's music has evolved into a unique blend of tropical psychedelia, incorporating diverse influences from its members' backgrounds. The band's innovative approach mixes surf guitar, organ sounds, and Latin percussion with elements of synth, French lyrics, and global pop, creating a fresh, freeform reinvention of the Chicha genre.

Chicha Libre's groundbreaking sound gained international acclaim with the release of the compilation "The Roots of Chicha," curated by band member Olivier Conan. The compilation introduced Chicha music to a broader audience, sparking a resurgence of interest in the genre worldwide. While staying true to their Chicha roots, the band's music has taken a distinctly psychedelic direction, earning them recognition as one of the foremost tropical psychedelic bands by MTV. Collaborative singles with artists from Colombia and Mexico are set for release in 2020, promising new explorations in sound.
