Cheikh Lô, born Cheikh N'Digel Lô, has brought the intricate dance music of Senegal, known as mbalax, to Western audiences by infusing it with elements of salsa, Zairian/Congolese rhumba, folk, and jazz. With his infectious and hook-laden pop style, Lô has softened the hard edges of mbalax, making it more accessible globally. Lô's unique musical approach has earned him praise for his rounded sweetness in vocals and his ability to create a magic mbalax sound that transcends cultural boundaries.

Born in Bobo-Dioulasso, near Senegal's border with Mali, Lô grew up speaking Bambara, Wolof, and French. He taught himself to play drums and guitar as a youngster and later joined various bands in Dakar before moving to France in 1985. Lô's collaboration with Youssou N'Dour led to the successful release of his album "Ne La Thiass," earning him recognition and awards both in Africa and internationally. Lô's musical journey continued with successful releases like "Bambay Gueej" and "Lamp Fall," showcasing his talent and innovation in the world of mbalax music.
