Cedar Walton

Cedar Walton, a highly esteemed hard bop pianist, was known for his funky touch and exceptional melodic sense. Not only a top-tier interpreter of standards, Walton was also a prolific composer with notable tunes like "Mosaic" and "Bolivia." His early-'60s tenure with the Jazz Messengers saw his compositions becoming integral to the band's repertoire, showcasing his talent beyond just his instrumental prowess. Walton's career saw him collaborating with jazz legends like Art Blakey, John Coltrane, and Abbey Lincoln, leaving a lasting impact on the genre.

After starting his musical journey under his mother's guidance, Walton's relocation to New York in 1955 kickstarted his professional career. His time in the Army in Germany led to collaborations with notable musicians, shaping his musical identity. Walton's pivotal years playing with the likes of Kenny Dorham, J.J. Johnson, and Art Farmer set the stage for his influential stint with Art Blakey's Jazz Messengers. Throughout the '70s and beyond, Walton continued to lead his bands, releasing a string of acclaimed albums showcasing his evolving musical vision until his passing in 2013 at the age of 79.
