Biography

Cap'n Jazz, a short-lived yet influential band, played a key role in transforming emo from an underground punk subgenre to a more mainstream subset of indie rock. Formed in Chicago in 1989, the band's unique sound, characterized by cryptic lyrics and amateurish vocals, garnered a cult following in the Midwest. Despite their limited discography, Cap'n Jazz's impact extended through their members' involvement in other successful emo bands such as Joan of Arc and Promise Ring.

After disbanding in the mid-'90s, members of Cap'n Jazz pursued different musical projects, with Davey von Bohlen founding Promise Ring, Tim Kinsella forming Joan of Arc, and Mike Kinsella exploring projects like American Football and Owen. The band's legacy was further cemented with a retrospective compilation released in 1998, as well as subsequent reunions and reissues over the years that kept their influence alive in the emo scene.
