Formed in 2005 after a successful open-mic night experiment, the Ben Miller Band consists of Ben Miller on guitar, banjo, and vocals, Doug Dicharry on percussion, trombone, and mandolin, and Scott Leeper on a homemade one-string washtub bass. The band's music blends blues, bluegrass, folk, and country elements, and they released albums like 1 Ton and 2 Ton on the Mudstomp label in 2010. The band's inventive approach extends to their use of unique instruments and equipment, such as Miller's telephone receiver microphone and trunk drum pedal.

In the aftermath of a tornado that struck their hometown of Joplin, Missouri in 2011, the Ben Miller Band organized a charity to aid in the community's recovery and released the benefit album Record for Joplin. Their success led to opening for ZZ Top in 2013 and signing with New West Records. With producer Vance Powell, the band released Any Way, Shape or Form in 2014 and followed up with Choke Cherry Tree in 2018, featuring new members Rachel Ammons and Smilin' Bob Lewis.
