Formed in 2004 in Gunma Prefecture, back number is a rock trio led by vocalist Iyori Shimizu, alongside bassist Kazuya Kojima and drummer Hisashi Kurihara. The band gained early recognition by winning a competition to perform at the 2008 Shonan Music Festival Vol. 2, showcasing their midtempo rock style with folk influences and Shimizu's emotive vocals. In 2011, back number incorporated piano and violin into their sound, enhancing the emotional depth of their ballads such as "Omoidasenakunaru Sonohimade." The trio continued to evolve their music, introducing bell chimes and orchestral elements to create poignant compositions that explore themes of love and affection.
