Biography

Spanish flamenco artists Mayte Mateus and Maria Mendiolo formed the duo Baccara in 1977 after being discovered by RCA executive Leon Deane. With their debut single "Yes Sir I Can Boogie" topping the U.K. charts, the duo quickly gained success across Europe and the U.K. with follow-up hits like "Sorry I'm a Lady." Despite being considered one-hit wonders in Britain, Baccara continued to release albums and tour internationally, with Mateus and Mendiolo eventually pursuing solo ventures by the early '80s.

After the original Baccara split in 1983, both Mateus and Mendiolo led their own versions of the band, with Mendiolo's duo becoming prominent in the HI-NRG scene in the late '80s. The legacy of Baccara continued through the '90s with both versions of the band recording and performing, culminating in hits packages and a name change back to Baccara in the late '90s. Maria Mendiolo passed away in 2021 at the age of 69, leaving behind a lasting impact on the music industry.
