Yussef Kamaal is a London-based jazz-funk duo consisting of members Yussef Dayes and Kamaal Williams (Henry Wu). Their music blends '70s jazz-funk with contemporary London bass, beat, and hip-hop influences. Dayes is a drummer for the Afrobeat band United Vibrations, while Williams is a producer, keyboard player, and drummer known for his solo work.
The duo first met in 2007 and later formed Yussef Kamaal after a successful improvisational performance at the Boiler Room. Their music is characterized by spontaneous creation, often starting from a single drumbeat. Signed to Gilles Peterson's Brownswood label, they released their debut album, Black Focus, in November 2016 with the help of engineer Malcolm Catto and other musicians like saxophonist Shabaka Hutchings.
