Biography

Yann Tiersen, born on June 23, 1970, in Brest, Brittany, is a Paris-based composer known for his eclectic style that blends French folk music, chanson, musette waltz, rock, avant-garde, and classical influences. Raised in Rennes, Tiersen studied violin and piano at a young age before venturing into composing soundtracks for short films and plays. His breakthrough came with the success of his score for the film Amélie in 2001, leading to international acclaim.

Tiersen's discography includes albums such as Valse des Monstres (1995), Rue des Cascades (1996), and Phare (1998), which showcased his intricate arrangements and emotional style. Collaborating with artists like Lisa Germano and Neil Hannon, Tiersen continued to expand his musical horizons with releases like Absente (2001) and (Infinity) (2014). His 2016 album Eusa, featuring solo piano pieces inspired by his home on the island of Ushant, marked a departure from his previous work. Tiersen's 2019 album ALL, recorded at a community center in Brittany, further demonstrated his innovative approach to music-making.
