Biography

The Who emerged as a prominent band during the rock & roll era, blending art-pop and hard-rock influences to create dynamic music that expanded the genre's boundaries. Originating from the Mod scene in the mid-1960s, the band quickly gained fame for their energetic live performances and innovative songwriting, with hits like "My Generation" and "I Can't Explain" propelling them to stardom. Following the success of their rock opera Tommy in 1969, the Who solidified their status as hard rock pioneers with the acclaimed album Who's Next in 1971, becoming one of the biggest bands of the decade. Despite internal tensions and the tragic death of drummer Keith Moon in 1978, the band persevered, embarking on numerous farewell tours and temporary reunions before establishing a permanent arrangement in the late '90s.

Founding members Pete Townshend and John Entwistle met in high school in London, forming a rock & roll band that would evolve into the Who. With a sound influenced by American R&B and British rock acts, the band underwent various lineup changes before achieving commercial success with hits like "Substitute" and "Happy Jack." The release of the rock opera Tommy in 1969 marked a turning point for the band, leading to critical acclaim and international recognition.
