Biography

The Cars, a Boston-based quintet, gained popularity in the late '70s and early '80s with their unique blend of proto-punk, garage rock, and bubblegum pop influences. Releasing a string of platinum albums and Top 40 singles, they were considered one of the most successful American new wave bands of their time. Despite disbanding in 1988, the group reunited twice in the mid-2000s and 2011, with their music's enduring popularity showcasing their lasting influence.

Formed in 1976 by Ric Ocasek and Ben Orr, who had been collaborators for several years, The Cars evolved from their early folk trio days to become a prominent fixture in the Boston music scene. Their self-titled debut album in 1978 marked the beginning of their chart success, with subsequent albums like Candy-O and Heartbeat City solidifying their place in music history. Following their eventual breakup in 1988, the band members pursued solo projects, with Ocasek also gaining recognition as a producer for various new wave acts. The Cars' legacy continued with posthumous releases and a brief reunion in 2011, culminating in their final album, Move Like This.
