Spineshank, formed in 1996 in Los Angeles, emerged from the disbandment of Basic Enigma, with members Johnny Santos, Mike Sarkisyan, and Tom Decker. Their sound evolved after being inspired by Fear Factory's Demanufacture, leading to a new lineup and a friendship with Fear Factory guitarist Dino Cazares. This connection helped them secure opening slots for prominent acts like Coal Chamber and Soulfly, eventually leading to a record deal with Roadrunner. Their debut album, Strictly Diesel, released in 1998, featured Fear Factory's Burton C. Bell on the track "Stain," showcasing their affinity for the electro-metal sound that influenced their music.

Following their debut, Spineshank released Height of Callousness in 2000, further solidifying their place in the heavy music scene. The band's early years were marked by a rapid rise to prominence, fueled by their energetic live performances and connections with established acts in the genre.
