His gospel roots ran deep, as he had a background in preaching and radio before transitioning to secular music. While he didn't achieve the same level of pop success as some of his contemporaries, he left a lasting impact on the genre and influenced artists like the Rolling Stones.

In the '80s and beyond, Burke continued to be a prominent figure in classic soul music, touring and recording albums that appealed primarily to roots music enthusiasts. His critically acclaimed comeback album, "Don't Give Up on Me," showcased his talents with contributions from esteemed songwriters and producers. Despite not achieving mainstream pop success, Burke's legacy as a soul legend remained intact until his untimely passing in 2010, leaving behind a final album, "Hold on Tight," recorded with Dutch Soul band De Dijk.
