The Smith Westerns, formed in 2007 by Max Kakacek and Cullen Omori while still in high school, quickly gained local popularity in Chicago with their garage, glam, and punk-inspired music. By 2009, the band had released their self-titled debut album through HoZac Records, showcasing a blend of '70s glam rock with their signature influences. The band's sound evolved with their second album, Dye It Blonde, featuring notable collaborations and a slicker production style. Following a successful tour and record release, the Smith Westerns disbanded in 2014, with Cullen Omori pursuing a solo career and other members forming the band Whitney under Mom + Pop Records.

Throughout their career, the Smith Westerns maintained a youthful energy and DIY ethos that resonated with fans, from their early days playing house parties to touring extensively and collaborating with acclaimed musicians.
