The band, initially known as Ambrose Slade, embraced the glam movement with humorously misspelled song titles and a "skinhead" look, becoming a beloved party band at home. Despite struggles to break into the US market, albums like Slade Alive! and Slayed? are considered glam era classics.

As glam rock faded and punk emerged, Slade's chart success waned, but they maintained a dedicated following through constant touring and album releases. A resurgence in the early '80s saw them back on the charts with hits like "We'll Bring the House Down" and "Lock up Your Daughters."
