Schoolly D

Schoolly D, known as the forefather of gangsta rap and credited by Ice-T, pioneered hip-hop by producing and distributing his own early recordings like "P.S.K. 'What Does It Mean?'" (1985). Hailing from West Philadelphia, Schoolly D's confrontational style and shocking themes influenced generations of artists and extended across four decades, including hits like Schoolly-D (1985) and Saturday Night! The Album (1986). His impact on the genre is evident through samples in music and his original theme for the TV show Aqua Teen Hunger Force.

Raised in West Philadelphia and Atlanta, Schoolly D emerged in 1984 with "Gangster Boogie" and gained fame with "P.S.K. 'What Does It Mean?'" in 1985, recognized as the first gangsta rap recording. His self-titled debut in 1985 and subsequent albums like Saturday Night! The Album (1986) and Smoke Some Kill (1988) showcased his unique sound, with tracks like "Signifying Rapper" incorporating live instrumentation and controversial themes. Schoolly D's influence continued through collaborations, painting, and providing the theme song for Aqua Teen Hunger Force, solidifying his status as a hip-hop pioneer.
