Biography

Formed in 1998 as part of the Mittelalter scene in German rock, Schandmaul combined medieval instrumentation with electric rock. The Munich-based group gained momentum with their debut album Wahre Helden (True Heroes) in 1999, leading to festival appearances and a record deal. Following lineup changes, Schandmaul continued to rise in popularity, achieving Top Ten chart success with albums like Mit Leib und Seele (With Body and Soul) in 2006 and Anderswelt (Other World) in 2008, and celebrating their tenth anniversary with a concert in Munich.

In 2013, Schandmaul marked their 15th anniversary with a retrospective album, So Weit, So Gut 1998-2013 (So Far, So Good), which reached number seven on the German album chart. The band's subsequent albums, Unendlich (Infinite) and Leuchtfeuer (Beacons of Light), further solidified their success, with Leuchtfeuer spending two weeks at the top of the German charts in 2016. With a return to progressive folk and folklore-inspired songwriting, Schandmaul continued to captivate audiences and expand their musical horizons.
