Roll Deep

Roll Deep, the pioneering grime crew from East London, emerged before the genre was even named. Fusing hip-hop with techy electronic beats, their music was dubbed gabba-gangsta-garage by critic Simon Reynolds. Led by Wiley, the group featured a rotating roster of up to 20 members, with key figures including Flow Dan, Skepta, and Dizzee Rascal. Despite early underground success and a Mercury Prize win for Rascal, Roll Deep faced label challenges, eventually forming their own Roll Deep Recordings. Their sound evolved from hardcore grime to a mix of grime and pop, culminating in a comeback with "The Return of the Big Money Sound" following Wiley's solo success.
