Barretto's diverse musical interests stem from his background in jazz, rather than traditional Latin music, shaping his unique approach to salsa. Beginning his career in the '50s with American jazz musicians in New York, Barretto made a significant impact in the '60s as a sought-after session player, later emerging as a leading Latin jazz artist at Fania Records in the '70s.

Transitioning to Atlantic Records in the '70s and collaborating with notable artists, Barretto continued to experiment with incorporating rock and funk influences into his music. His notable works include the 1981 album "La Cuna" and participation in the anti-apartheid Sun City project in 1985. In 1992, Barretto introduced the Latin jazz sextet New World Spirit, producing innovative albums for Concord Picante.
