Ravi Shankar

Ravi Shankar, born in Varanasi, India in 1920, came from a prestigious Brahmin family and quickly immersed himself in music through his brother's dance and music troupe. Studying under the renowned Allauddin Khan, he embarked on a successful career as a sitar virtuoso, captivating audiences in India and abroad. Shankar's innovative approach to blending classical Indian music with Western influences earned him international acclaim, attracting famous disciples like George Harrison and Philip Glass.

Shankar's musical legacy extends beyond traditional Hindustani music, as he fearlessly explored new genres and collaborations throughout his illustrious career. Despite facing criticism from purists, Shankar's pioneering spirit and exceptional talent solidified his reputation as one of the most influential Indian musicians of the 20th century. His final performance, alongside his daughter Anoushka, took place in Bangalore in 2012, marking the end of a remarkable journey that continues to inspire generations of musicians worldwide.
